SOLAR1 IS TO BRING TWO NEW TEAM MEMBERS

Monaco, September 16th, 2015 – With two successful 2014 and 2015 solar boat races seasons behind us, Solar 1 is poised to extend its racing reach to other destinations worldwide, and we are actively looking at suitable locations in addition to our traditional home in the Principality of Monaco. With this objective in mind, our team is putting another solar-cell in its engine with the addition of two new Monaco-based team members as of September 2015.

We are hence pleased to announce the appointment of Bertrand Petyt as CEO for Solar 1 Races. Bertrand comes from an extensive hotel and cruise ship senior management background, and is currently Director of Operations for Parkview Monaco SAM, a holding company which regroups the leisure assets of a family-owned enterprise, with a focus on Ultra-Deluxe assets and brands in the hotel, residences and yachting businesses. Bertrand is also Professor of Management at the International University of Monaco where he is responsible for Hospitality Operations Management and Human Resources Management classes for Master-level students, as well as master corporate projects management. Bertrand will work jointly with Sergei, Chairman at Solar 1, in order to position Solar 1 as the leading organization setting the scene for a new era in competitive sustainable racing, with immediate responsibilities focused on developing the Solar 1 brand globally to attract the best racing locations, teams and sponsors and create an iconic and sustainable sports brand.

Also joining the Solar 1 team is Martin Woszczynski, a Swedish national with an extensive background in technology sales and marketing. Martin recently graduated from the International University of Monaco with his MBA on Innovation Management, and will be supervising the Social Media and team organization activities, as well as assisting the CEO in the Sponsorship and Marketing strategies.

Solar 1 Races is actively working on the 2016 season, with the Monaco races tentatively set for mid-July 2016. We are also investigating other possible locations for our races, with Miami, Shanghai, and Dubai as possible options. We will liaise with each one of you in due time for registration procedures and related information.

SOLAR1 IS ANNOUNCING RESULTS OF 2ND EDITION OF SOLAR 1 – MONTE-CARLO CUP

Monaco, September 16th, 2015 – The second edition of the Solar 1 – Monte-Carlo Cup powered by the Yacht Club of Monaco took place from July 9th to July 11th 2015 and united 24 teams from 9 different countries. The teams competed in three separate events comprising an endurance race of 30 laps, a test of maneuverability on a slalom course and a one-on-one speed duel.

The 2015 rankings are as follows:

Open Class
1st  Clafis Private Energy Solar Team I, Netherlands, (800 points)
2nd Clafis Private Energy Solar Team II, Netherlands, (600 points)
3rd  Tu Delft, Netherlands, (450 points)

A Class
1st  Dutch Solar Boat Team, Netherlands, (700 points)
2nd SCIGRIP, Poland, (700 points)
3rd  Han Solar Boat Team, Netherlands, (450 points)

These challenges provide opportunities for innovation and testing for these boats of the future, divided into two categories (A class and Open class), and putting into practice technological and ecological imagination in the field.

Most of the boats have been designed and built by engineering students from different countries across the world, keen to promote solar power and demonstrate its viability and performance. Powered only by the sun, some of these solar dragonflies can reach speeds up to 25 knots and have unlimited autonomy in the sunshine.

A highlight of this edition was the introduction by the Yacht Club de Monaco of the International YCM Speed Record for Solar Boats, in collaboration with the UIM (Union Internationale Motonautique), the goal being to establish a “benchmark” record which can then be attempted on other race areas throughout the world. It’s a speed record set over a distance of one eighth of a nautical mile, with Gerard van der Schaar, driving for Clafis Private Energy Solar Team setting the first record in a time of 18.753 seconds, a speed of 23.996 knots.

On the day HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco celebrated the 10th anniversary of his reign, the competitors at the Solar1 Monte-Carlo Cup received a surprise visit from the Sovereign, who was out on the water to encourage them, confirming his commitment to promoting renewable energy sources.

9TH JANUARY 2015 – WEARABLE SOLAR

WEARABLE SOLAR!

Check out this cool and innovative application of solar panels!
Pauline Van Dongen has designed a very stylish coat and dress, that can if worn in the full sun for an hour, store enough energy to allow a typical smartphone to be 50% charged.

The multi-disciplinary team behind Wearable Solar is composed by: Pauline van Dongen , Christiaan Holland (Project leader Gelderland Valoriseert from the HAN) and Gert Jan Jongerden (Solar-energy expert).

‘Solar cells have been constructed to capture solar light and convert it into electricity. Their internal structure is layered and resembles the stratified cells of the human body, which naturally interacts with sunlight. If a body is augmented with solar cells it will embody enough electrical power to become a real source of energy. For the Wearable Solar project, a coat and a dress have been designed placing solar cells close to the body. The two wool and leather prototypes comprise parts with solar cells which can be revealed when the sun shines or folded away and worn invisibly when they aren’t directly needed. The coat incorporates 48 rigid solar cells while the dress 72 flexible solar cells. Each of them, if worn in the full sun for an hour, can store enough energy to allow a typical smartphone to be 50% charged. The Sun is the biggest source of energy on earth and now that fossil fuels are depleting, it’s time we come up with a sustainable alternative’.
